MS-63 PCGS 1908 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (No Motto)
Saint-Gaudens' initial model for this coin was a Double Eagle, rather than a $20 Gold piece. This made it so Saint-Gaudens had to do more work, as he had to create a new design from scratch. Saint-Gaudens initially wanted his design to be based on the 1783 Flowing Hair Dollar, however other sculptors also submitted designs that Saint-Gaudens considered. Saint-Gaudens sent his models off to the Mint in 1907 with no name attached to them. The motto "In God We Trust," which was used on all Double Eagle designs after 1866, was not added until Saint-Gaudens' death. Saint-Gaudens
